PUNCH GUIDE TO DRINKING IN MANHATTAN
Beverage magazine Punch released a guide to bars, clubs, dives, and restaurants in Manhattan that they deemed the best. It was well-categorized and showed off only Manhattan’s finest cocktail menus, grimiest dive bars, and most spectacular views. While not updated since 2019 or so, it then becomes an archive of some of Manhattan’s lost gems such as the Pegu Club which have been lost to time. I took inspiration from the 1988 film Cocktail, which follows Tom Cruise as a bartender across a neon-lit 80s New York City.
I first created an icon system that would represent each category of bar, along with the neon-lit visual language via layered effects. I then had a framework to insert each of the recommended venues into in a more coherent manner.The map adds both a visual appeal as well as a way for people to see what parts of the island have the most of each kind of bar. This can help them in a search or planning out a bar crawl.
